Getting your documents in order

A plain-language checklist for gathering the personal documents most processes ask for, and keeping copies safe.

Who this is for: Anyone starting a move, a job search, or an official process.

Most official processes ask for the same handful of documents. Gathering them early saves weeks later. Keep originals somewhere secure and store clear scans separately. Never send identity documents to another member of this or any platform.

Steps

  • List the documents you already hold
  • Note which ones are expired or missing
  • Find out the issuing office for each missing document
  • Make clear scans and store them securely
  • Keep a simple record of reference numbers

Documents or information usually needed

  • Government photo ID
  • Birth certificate
  • Proof of address
  • Tax or social security identifier
  • Any professional certificates

Common pitfalls

  • Sending document scans to individuals you met online
  • Letting a document expire mid-process
  • Relying on a single copy

Sources

  • Official government issuing authorities in your country

When to bring in a professional

Requirements differ by country and change often. Confirm current requirements with the issuing authority or a qualified professional before relying on any list.
