Preparing for a first conversation
How to make a first conversation with a potential partner useful and low-risk.
Who this is for: Anyone about to speak with someone they met through Bridge Forward.
A first conversation is for learning, not deciding. Keep it short, keep it on a platform you control, and leave with a clear sense of whether a next step makes sense. You never owe anyone a second conversation.
Steps
- Write down three questions before the call
- Keep the first call to 30 minutes
- Do not share your home address or documents
- Agree one small next step, or agree there is none
- Write yourself a two-line note afterwards
Common pitfalls
- Agreeing to money, loans, or co-signing early
- Moving off-platform before you are comfortable
- Feeling pressured to decide quickly
When to bring in a professional
If a conversation moves toward money, property, immigration status or legal agreements, pause and speak to an independent qualified professional first.
